National Cathedral Originals
Early in 2007 I was commissioned to do a series of watercolors of the Washington National Cathedral and Grounds to recognize the Cathedral’s Centennial Year, 2008. The 23 paintings, shown below, were on exhibit in the Tower Gallery of the Cathedral from December 2007 through December 2008. When I first thought of sharing my impressions of the Cathedral through painting, the challenge presented endless facets. There was the vastness and grandeur, the color changes and shadow patterns, and quiet, hidden spaces; all either shouted to be recorded or called softly to be remembered by a gentler interpretation. I tried to paint a variety of images that touched many of the beloved parts of that magnificent building, but I had to choose a very few from among innumerable possibilities. To paint these watercolors was challenging, exhilarating and a distinct honor.
